The Clinic for Ear, Throat and Nose Diseases and Head and Neck Surgery, University Clinical Center Tuzla is in the process of buying new medical equipment. A new device ATMOS Varioair is used for “dry” thermal examination of the vestibular organ by means of air. Its precise temperature control, as well as the correct dose of air flow, ensure that the transferred heat energy remains constant during the stimulation of the vestibular system.
Head of the Clinic Ass. Prof. Almir Salkić explained that caloric test is a useful clinical and diagnostic tool that can detect the cause of dizziness and examine the function of the acoustic nerve in charge of of hearing and balance. In the earlier period this test was performed by injecting water into the patient’s external ear canal, thus stimulating the sense of balance, which causes eye movement abnormalities. The test measured those eye movement abnormalities. The old way had its limitations, especially in patients who had perforation of the eardrum, and in whom this test had to be performed with special precautions. A new device for caloric vestibular test will provide faster, more reliable and safer diagnostic findings.
