For the first time in Bosnia and Herzegovina, health professionals from the Clinic for Cardiovascular Surgery, University Clinical Center Tuzla performed tricuspid valve reconstruction surgery using the extracellular matrix. A team of cardiovascular surgeons and nurses/technicians made a total reconstruction of the tricuspid valve in a patient with severe tricuspid valve insufficiency and heart failure caused by endocarditis.
A decellularized extracellular matrix is used in cardiovascular surgery for the reconstruction of diseased cardiac tissue in patients. The extracellular matrix allows endocardial cells to connect with artificial tissue, and has the ability to regenerate diseased or damaged heart tissues.
Earlier surgical methods required placement of artificial and mechanical (metallic) prosthesis.
