The Clinic for Pediatric Diseases at the University Clinical Center Tuzla recently hosted expert lectures on spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) in children. Dr. Salkanović Delibegović Sabina, a pediatrician and neuropediatrics sub- specialist, presented on the topic “Treatment of Spinal Muscular Atrophy in Early Childhood.” Dr. Salkanović Delibegović emphasized that SMA is a hereditary neuromuscular disorder marked by the degeneration of lower motor neurons, affecting approximately 1 in 10,000 newborns annually. If left untreated, SMA can be fatal within the first two years of life.
Given that spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is a rare pediatric disease, educating healthcare professionals, patient families, and the general public about its nature, diagnosis, and treatment is essential. Recently, there has been growing professional interest in advancing research focused on SMA treatment and assessing the quality of life for affected children.
In line with this commitment, the Clinic for Pediatric Diseases is dedicated to the continuous education of healthcare professionals who play a critical role in enhancing the quality of life for children with spinal muscular atrophy. Today’s training session, supported by Medis International BiH, included a practical component made possible by their sponsorship.
