According to the World Health Organization, approximately 15 million premature babies are born each year. The color purple, symbolizing this day, represents sensitivity and uniqueness.
The goal of celebrating the International Prematurity Awareness Day is to draw public attention to the global problem of premature birth, which is the leading cause of infant death in developed and underdeveloped countries.
The global theme for World Prematurity Day 2024 is “Small actions, big impact: First skin-to-skin contact for every baby everywhere.
World Prematurity Awareness Day was first celebrated on November 17, 2011 as a collaboration of the March of Dimes Foundation (USA), the European Foundation for the Care of Newborn Infants (EFCNI), which represents the parents of 20 European countries, the Little Big Souls International Foundation (Africa) and the National Premmie Foundation (NPF, Australia).
