From November 18 to 22, 2024, the Clinic for Pulmonary Diseases at the University Clinical Center Tuzla has been hosting a multi-day training program on the use of high-flow oxygen therapy devices. This program is designed for physicians and medical technicians at the University Clinical Center Tuzla and features both theoretical and practical components.
“We are delighted to collaborate with esteemed experts and colleagues from the Clinic for Anesthesiology and Reanimatology, whose involvement ensures a comprehensive transfer of knowledge and practical skills,” stated Prim. Dr. Nada Remetić, Head of the Clinic for Pulmonary Diseases.
Prim. Dr. Remetić highlighted the significance of this training, stating: “Many patients with respiratory diseases require advanced treatment methods, including high-flow oxygen therapy. Respiratory diseases rank prominently in international statistical classifications, with World Health Organization data indicating a rising prevalence of lung conditions. During the season of respiratory infections and severe pneumonia, the demand for oxygen therapy increases significantly, underscoring the critical importance of this education.”
Prof. Dr. Jasmina Smajić, Head of the Clinic for Anesthesiology and Resuscitation, emphasized the innovative approach to this year’s training: “The initial training was conducted in 2021 for the staff of the Clinic for Infectious Diseases, and since then, we have continually refined and enhanced the program. At the initiative of the Clinic for Pulmonary Diseases, we organized this training to cover both basic and advanced principles of oxygen therapy. Over five days, participants engage in a theoretical curriculum that covers the fundamentals of anatomy, respiratory physiology, the importance of ventilation and perfusion, and the application of both low-flow and high-flow oxygen therapy. Special attention is also given to the potential adverse effects of oxygen. The theoretical sessions are followed by practical training, enabling participants to immediately apply their newly acquired knowledge.”
“I was pleasantly surprised by the strong interest shown by the participants—over 50 attendees joined on the first day of training. We conducted a preliminary test to assess their baseline knowledge, and an evaluation test is planned at the conclusion of the program. This approach allows for an objective evaluation of the effectiveness of knowledge transfer,” said Prof. Dr. Smajić.
She also emphasized the longstanding collaboration between the Clinic for Pulmonary Diseases and the Clinic for Anesthesiology and Resuscitation: “We frequently act as consultants in managing patients with respiratory failure and provide support for procedures requiring anesthesia, such as bronchoscopies. This close cooperation greatly enhances the quality of treatment and patient care.”
Jasmin Halilović, Chief Technician of the Clinic for Pulmonary Diseases, highlighted that the training sessions were accredited and certified by the Chamber of Physicians and Medical Technicians, further affirming the quality of this educational program.
“This training not only enhances the expertise of our staff but also elevates the standards of care for patients with respiratory diseases,” Halilović stated.
This initiative marks a significant step forward in the fight against respiratory diseases and in strengthening the professional capacities of the University Clinical Center Tuzla. Thanks to the dedication of the organizers and educators, healthcare professionals will be better equipped to address modern challenges in the treatment of respiratory patients.
