At the Clinic for Eye Diseases of University Clinical Center Tuzla, a pars plana vitrectomy with a graft of the internal limiting membrane was successfully performed. According to the head of the clinic, Assoc. Prof. Jasmin Zvorničanin, this marks the first time such a complex surgical procedure involving the posterior segment of the eye has been conducted at the clinic. The procedure is designed to enhance visual acuity and represents a significant advancement in ophthalmic surgical capabilities at Clinical Center Tuzla.
The surgical team at the Clinic for Eye Diseases successfully performed a pars plana vitrectomy, followed by the placement of an internal limiting membrane graft over the optic disc fossa. This intricate procedure, targeting the posterior segment of the eye, was conducted on a young male patient with a congenital optic nerve anomaly that had led to maculopathy and a risk of permanent vision loss.
“The surgery and postoperative recovery proceeded smoothly, resulting in excellent postoperative visual acuity,” announced Assoc. Prof. Dr. Zvorničanin, Head of the clinic.
He emphasized that such a procedure offers numerous benefits, particularly for younger patients, as it significantly improves visual acuity. He noted that operations of this complexity require meticulous preoperative assessment and patient preparation to ensure the best possible postoperative outcomes.
Pars plana vitrectomy with a graft provides long-term stability of the posterior segment of the eye, effectively regulating subretinal fluid, controlling the eye’s inflammatory response, and preserving visual function. It represents one of the most advanced surgical treatments for patients requiring posterior segment eye surgery.
Previously, patients with optic nerve disc pits were managed using alternative medical approaches, making this surgical breakthrough a significant advancement in treatment options.
“By implementing advanced surgical procedures, we are committed to offering our patients the most modern treatment options, delivering significant benefits in preserving and enhancing visual function. This operation, performed by the skilled team at the Eye Clinic of Clinical Center Tuzla, is a testament to our dedication to providing high-quality and safe healthcare services. We are proud that Clinical Center Tuzla can offer such a highly sophisticated procedure, placing us on par with leading European institutions. Like many others conducted at our Eye Clinic, this procedure required exceptional expertise and seamless teamwork between our doctors and medical technicians—an essential factor in achieving outstanding outcomes.
