The Clinic for Skin Diseases of the University Clinical Center Tuzla has joined a regional campaign dedicated to acne, one of the most common skin conditions today.
The campaign aims to raise public awareness about the importance of professional dermatological treatment for acne and to ensure individuals receive timely medical care.
This year, the Clinic for Skin Diseases is participating in the free acne screening initiative, organized by the Cutis Association of Dermatovenerologists and sponsored by Uriage.
“Acne vulgaris is the most common skin disease in industrialized countries. The first skin changes typically appear during puberty, triggered by hormonal fluctuations, and can persist into adulthood. Around 80-90% of young people experience some degree of skin irregularities, with 20-30% seeking medical assistance,” explained Dr. Senada Resić Džananović, PhD, head of the Clinic.
She also highlighted the growing number of adults, particularly women, consulting dermatologists for acne-related issues later in life.
“Acne-prone skin tends to be oily, with numerous open and closed comedones, inflamed papules, and pustules that can be painful. Scarring and hyperpigmented post-inflammatory changes are common, significantly impacting patients both physically and psychologically. This emotional burden can further complicate the disease course and treatment outcomes. These skin changes most commonly appear on the face, neck, shoulders, back, upper arms, and chest,” Dr. Resić Džananović emphasized.
The primary factors contributing to acne include excessive consumption of sweets and high-carbohydrate foods, overconsumption of cow’s milk and dairy products, smoking, pore-clogging makeup, and comedogenic skincare products.
Acne treatment can be long-term, mentally and financially challenging for patients. Additionally, the misuse of topical and systemic therapies without specialist guidance can pose serious risks.
Through preventive screenings, dermatologists at the Clinic for Skin Diseases, University Clinical Center Tuzla aim to educate patients on choosing the right treatment for their skin. They also emphasize the impact of dietary and lifestyle habits that can worsen and complicate the clinical course of acne.
