Prof.Dr. Dženita Ljuca, Head of the Clinic of Gynecology and Obsterics,University Clinical Centre Tuzla spent 6 months at one of the premier cancer care facilities- the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Clinical Hospital Centre Rijeka to complete her additional surgical training, during which she established valuable cooperation with Prof. Dr. Herman Haller, a specialist in gynecology, obstetrics and gynecologic oncology. During his visit to Tuzla, Prof. Dr. Heller, together with Prof. Dr. Ljuca and surgical team from Clinical Centre Tuzla, performed some of the most advanced gynecologic laparoscopic surgeries. Specifically, they performed laparoscopic hysterectomy with pelvic lymphadenectomy in a patient suffering from cancer of the body of the uterus, and total laparoscopic hysterectomy with removal of the parametrium and part of the vagina and bilateral pelvic lymphadenectomy in a patient suffering from cervical cancer. Also, a pelvic and para-aortic lymphadenectomy in addition to hysterectomy was performed in a patient suffering from cancer of the body of uterus.
According to Prof. Dr. Ljuca all surgeries and postoperative courses went uneventful, the patients are discharged from hospital, and histopathological findings speak strongly in favor of a radical surgery with edges in healthy tissue and a large number of lymph nodes removed by modern oncologic surgery standards.
Prof. Dr. Dženita Ljuca explained that the said laparoscopic surgical procedure in the treatment of cancer of the uterine body offers a number of benefits for patients such as faster recovery of patients and shorter hospital stay. Due to less tissue injury, an intraoperative hypermetabolic response is decreased and, therefore, the risk of complications are less, said Prof. D. Ljuca.
