The University Clinical Centre Tuzla, Clinic of Neurology organized a press conference on the occasion of World Stroke Day 2016. The purpose of the event is to inform the public on the importance of early detection of stroke warning symptoms and early treatment.
During the conference Prof. Dr. Osman Sinanović, head of the Clinic of Neurology, said that a stroke is a serious medical condition associated with a high level of mortality and disability. According to him, the incidence of new cases in B&H is 1.5 to 2 patients per 100 000 inhabitants. Professor Sinanović also said that over the past year 900 patients who suffered a stroke were hospitalized at the Clinic of Neurology, which is two-thirds of the total number of hospitalized patients.
Prof. Dr. Dževdet Smajlović, chief of Department of Cerebrovascular Diseases, who also addressed the press conference, pointed out that stroke is an important public health and economic issue. On this occasion Professor Smajlović said that the UKC Tuzla Clinic of Neurology has made significant progress in the management of patients with thrombolitic therapy in stroke. So far, he said, 200 thrombolitic therapies have been applied to patients suffering from stroke.
Prof.dr. Mirjana Vidović spoke about the importance of prevention, pointing out that developed countries have reduced the number of stroke patients and increased the survival rate with an adequate prevention. “Smoking, physical inactivity, high blood pressure, heart rhythm disorder, blood lipids, stress and depression are risk factors which can be controlled by making lifestyle changes or with an appropriate medical treatment, and thus reduce the incidence of stroke.” she said.
Dr. Zikrija Dostović spoke a bit on the importance of community education regarding early recognition of stroke symptoms. Head nurse of the Clinic of Neurology Alma Vuleta talked about nursing role in caring for and educating the patients and their family members about early recovery and ways of preventing of disease.
Representatives of students from Medical faculty University of Tuzla also attended press conference and invited citizens to public forum which will be held of Friday, 28 October in the amphitheater of Medical faculty, starting at 14 hours.
