On the occasion of World Cancer Day, 4 February, health professionals from the Clinic for Pulmonary Diseases recognizing the need to raise awareness about cancer, its prevention and treatment, held a press conference.
Ass. Prof. Suvad Dedić addressed the press and said that lung cancer is by far the leading cause of cancer death worldwide regardless of the continuous improvement in the treatment.
“Lung cancer remains responsible for 37% of cancer death in men and 21% in women. During the past three years the incidence rate of lung cancer in the Tuzla Canton is on the rise, and the highest rate occurring among those aged 51-65.”
Ass. Prof. Šefika Umihanić, head of the Department for Malignant Diseases said that causes for lung cancer formation may be different and related to genetics, environmental and lifestyle exposures. She also said that according to data recorded at the Clinic for Pulmonary Diseases, the most prevalent cancer type is adenocarcinoma, which may be caused by outdoor air pollution. The majority of patients seek care when the disease is at advanced stage (stage 3 or 4), and the biggest number of patients is recorded in the Tuzla Canton, Tuzla, Lukavac and Živinice.
About lung cancer diagnosis tests spoke Dr Dženan Halilović, MSci who said that in the year 2016, doctors from the Clinic had performed about 450 bronchoscopies and discovered 286 newly diagnosed lung cancer cases, which is 46 cases more than in 2015.
