The University Clinical Center Tuzla, Clinic for Gynecology and Obstetrics has marked the International Day of the Midwife. The purpose of this day is to bring awareness of the importance of midwives and to celebrate midwifery as a profession.
On the occasion of the day, midwifes from the Clinic for Gynecology and Obstetrics hosted a working meeting with the topic “the midwifery profession”.
This meeting provide an opportunity for participants to learn about a history of midwifery in Tuzla. The very first school for midwives in Tuzla was established in 1947. After three trained generations of midwives this school was closed, but reopened again in the year1955. In 1965, a four- year nursing school for midwives was opened in Tuzla. Today, nurse midwives from the Clinic for Gynecology and Obstetrics help delivering about 10 babies per day, 300 per month and about 4000 babies annually. Health care professionals from the Clinic pay special attention to the humanization of birth and different birth options while maternity ward has been completely renovated. Moreover, midwives work hard on a promotion of natural birth and psychophysical preparation of pregnant women for childbirth. The Clinic of Gynecology and Obstetrics, University Clinical Center Tuzla became a Baby- Friendly accredited facility in 2005.
