During the night, on 28 and 29 June, 2018, the team of transplant surgeons from the University Clinical Center Tuzla performed organs explantation and transplantation from the brain-dead donor who was hospitalized for severe cerebrovascular disorder. After the multiple organ harvesting, our surgeons performed two corneas, two kidneys and liver transplant surgery.
Head of the Clinic of Surgery, Prof. Dr. Zijah Rifatbegović said that the transplant surgery of the liver passed without peri- and postoperative complications and that the patient is clinically stabile. According to him, this would be the 21st transplant surgery of the liver perfomed in the University Clinical Center Tuzla. Transplant team of surgeons who performed the operation consisted of Prof. Dr. Zijah Rifatbegović, Dr. Zlatan Mehmedović and Dr. Maja Kovačević. They were supervised by Ass. Prof. Blaž Trotovšek, surgeon from the University Clinical Center Ljubljana.
Prof. Dr. Rifatbegović said that the transplant teams from the University Clinical Center Tuzla are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week to support and assist other health centers in Bosnia and Herzegovina in the multi- organ harvesting and transplant program in order to increase the total number of organ transplant surgeries in our country.
The two cornea transplant surgeries at the Clinic of Eye Diseases also went well for both patients, grafted corneas are clear, with no signs of failure or rejection, and if all go as planned the patients will soon be discharged from hospital, said Dr. Jasmin Zvorničanin. He also said that 36 cornea transplant surgeries so far have been performed in the University Clinical Center Tuzla. The team of surgeons from the Clinic of Eye Diseases, who performed cornea harvesting and transplantation surgeries are Dr. Halida Basić, Dr. Zlatko Mušanović, ass. Prof. Meliha Halilbašić, Dr. Jasmin Zvorničanin and Dr. Muamer Kikanović.
Prim. Dr. Samed Jagodić, head of the Clinic of Urology reported that the recovery period in both patients who have undergone kidney transplant surgery is without complications. He also said that surgeons from Urology have performed 10 transplant surgeries during the past six months, seven from live donor, one from cadaver donor and two surgeries when both organs harvesting and transplant surgeries were done in the University Clinical Center Tuzla. The team who performed transplant surgeries was made up of Dr. Samed Jagodić, Dr Mustafa Bazerdžanović and Dr. Asim Agić.
Doctors specialists and other hospital staff from the Clinic of Anesthesia and Resuscitation, Clinic of Radiology and Nuclear Medicine, Clinic of Internal Medicine, Polyclinic of Transfusion, Polyclinic of Lab Diagnostics and Hospital Pharmacy also have helped and contributed to the achievement of transplant surgery program in our hospital.
Director of the University Clinical Center Tuzla Prof. Dr. Nešad Hotić, on the occasion said that transplant program of solid organs, tissues and hematopoietic cells is one of the strategic goals of our institution. In addition to the amendments to the Law on Organ and Tissue Transplantation and the introduction of legislation for presumed consent, we still have to work hard on public awareness campaigns for organ donation.
