A team of doctors from the Clinic for Gynecology and Obstetrics, University Clinical Center Tuzla has recently prepared and included a non-invasive procedure to end a pregnancy on a list of OB/GYN health care services they regularly provide for its patients.
The availability of medical abortion procedure in our hospital is a great step forward toward improving women’s health. Assoc. Prof. Igor Hudić, MD, explained that a medical termination of pregnancy involves using medications in patients from 12 up to 20 weeks gestation, who are hospitalized for termination of pregnancy.
” The procedure of indicated medical abortion can be performed the earliest from 10 gestation weeks up to 28 gestation weeks in patients diagnosed with intrauterine fetal death. Pregnancy termination in the first trimester can also be done at home with follow up visit by gynecologists. Unlike early medical pregnancy termination, medical termination that is performed later in pregnancy must be done in a hospital setting. According to the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embriology (ESHRE) expert guidelines and protocols the patients will be provided with supplementary analgesia as needed during the medical abortion in support of a humane approach. Moreover, medical method of abortion decreases the rate of surgical complications such as the uterine wall perforation and abdominal injuries, while only in 2 to 5% of patients were recorded complications and the need for revision.” said Assoc. Prof. Hudić, and highlighted the lower costs of medical method of abortion compared to surgical approach.
