For the first time in Bosnia and Herzegovina a team of orthopedic surgeons from the Clinic for Orthopedy and Trauma, University Clinical Center Tuzla has performed endoscopic micro invasive surgery in a patient with an extremely rare pathological condition of the thoracic spine. Ass. Prof. Aleksandar Vujadinović, head of the Clinic for Orthopedy and Trauma on that occasion said that the patient had a very rare condition that affects one in one million people.
” A herniated disc was present in the area of the thoracic spine where the spinal cord due to its anatomical features is most sensitive to pressure and manipulations. For that reason instead of the conventional but inadequate back approach, we have decided to access the spine and the spinal cord through the chest to remove a herniated disc that had already led to myelopathy. The condition damaged the spinal cord to the point that results in a patient’s ability to move independently.” explained Ass. Prof. Aleksandar Vujadinović, and added that this surgery was a minimally invasive video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) done in cooperation with colleagues from the Clinic for Surgery.
Ass. Prof. Vujadinović also said that the postoperative course is uneventful and that the patient is doing well.
Members of the surgical team who performed surgery are orthopedists Ass. Prof. Aleksandar Vujadinović, Dr. Mahir Jašarević, Ass. Prof. Asmir Hrustić, Dr Elvir Atić, Dr. Armin Muhović, surgeons Dr. Nermin Mušanović and dr. Amar Kešetović, anesthesia Dr. Šuhreta Alić, anesthetist Ismar Ibrahimagi, and scrub nurse Ankica Vareškić.
