Surgery of the subluxated crystalline lens with retropupillary implantation of the Artisan aphakic lens was performed at the Clinic for Eye Diseases, University Clinical Center Tuzla.
“The team of surgeons and technicians from the Clinic for Eye Disease for the first time performed the extraction of the subluxated lens and implantation of the Artisan lens with fixation to the back surface of the iris. The demanding surgery was performed in two pediatric patients with subluxation of the lens caused by congenital weakness of the suspensory ligament of the lens. Surgery and postoperative course went uneventful with excellent the postoperative visual acuity in both patients.” explained Ass. Prof. Jasmin Zvorničanin M.D., head of the Department for surgery of the anterior segment of the eye.
He also said that benefits of this surgical procedure for patients are multiple. Functionally, patients get significant improvement in visual acuity, which is of particular importance in children where the development of visual function has not been completed.”The retropupillary method of implanting of this type of intraocular lens enables long-term stability of the front segment of the eye with excellent regulation of eye pressure, control of the eye’s inflammatory response and preservation of the number of endothelial cells,” added Dr. Zvorničanin and pointed out that the benefit for the patient is also reflected in excellent aesthetic results.
To achieve the best postoperative outcome this type of surgery requires a detailed preoperative evaluation and assessment of the patients, but most importantly it gives us a chance for the introduction of new surgical procedures for management of subluxation or lack of natural lens.
The introduction of implantation surgery of Artisan aphakic lenses with fixation on the back surface of the iris into daily surgery schedules establishes the Clinic for Eye Diseases, University Clinical Center Tuzla among the rare health institutions in the region where this procedure is performed.
