A team of surgeons from the University Clinical Center Tuzla successfully performed living sibling kidney donor transplant surgery. Surgery and the postoperative course were uneventful. Both the donor and the recipient are doing well in satisfactory condition.
Multidisciplinary team involved in transplant surgery consisted of surgeons and scrub technicians from the Clinic for Urology, anesthesiologists and anesthetists from the Clinic for Anesthesiology and Resuscitation, and health professionals from the Department for Nephrology, Clinic for Internal Medicine, the Clinic for Radiology and Nuclear Medicine, the Polyclinic for Laboratory Diagnostics, and the Polyclinic for Transfusion and Hospital Pharmacy.
Since 2023, four kidney transplants have been performed at the University Clinical Center Tuzla. In the upcoming months another eight pairs who passed pre- kidney transplant assessment are scheduled to undergo living donor transplant surgeries. Although the University Clinical Center Tuzla is a leader in transplantation medicine in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the number of organ transplantation surgeries is small, which is why it is necessary to work harder on public awareness and attitudes toward organ donation.
