On April 24, 2024, a successful living- donor kidney transplantation was performed at the University Clinical Center Tuzla.
A multidisciplinary team comprising surgeons and scrub technicians from the Clinic for Urology, anesthesiologists and anesthetists from the Clinic for Anesthesiology and Reanimation, alongside staff from the Department of Nephrology, Clinic for Internal Medicine, Clinic for Radiology and Nuclear Medicine, Polyclinic for Laboratory Diagnostics, Polyclinic for Transfusion, Hospital Pharmacy, and the Institute for Psychological and Social Protection, collaborated flawlessly in the transplantation process.
According to Assoc. Prof. Samed Jagodić, head of the Clinic for Urology, the kidney donor was the mother, while the recipient was her twenty-eight-year-old son. The operative and postoperative course proceeded without complications, and both the donor and the transplant recipient are currently in a stable condition of health.
Prof. Dr. Šekib Umihanić, director of the University Clinical Center Tuzla, on this occasion said that the University Clinical Center Tuzla continues to uphold its position as a frontrunner in transplantation medicine within Bosnia and Herzegovina. However, despite the legislative framework at the entity level and the growing interest in donor registration, the actual number of organ transplants remains disproportionately low. Therefore, there is an imperative need to perpetually engage in initiatives aimed at enhancing public awareness regarding the critical significance of organ donation.
