The University Clinical Center Tuzla has signed an agreement with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) to provide medical services to migrants transiting through Bosnia and Herzegovina, with a particular focus on the Tuzla Canton. This agreement marks a significant step forward in advancing humanitarian efforts and safeguarding the migrant population’s right to healthcare, in line with the principles of humanity.
According to Mr. Midhat Dugonjić, Head of the IOM in Tuzla, the signing of this agreement significantly improves access to healthcare services for migrants in transit. This milestone ensures that migrants can receive medical assistance in cases of serious injuries or emergencies, addressing their critical needs during transit through Bosnia and Herzegovina, particularly within the Tuzla Canton.
In addition to facilitating the provision of medical services, the agreement includes reimbursement for healthcare costs incurred by Clinical Center Tuzla in treating migrants. This arrangement not only supports the operations of Clinical Center Tuzla but also aids other state agencies and institutions involved in managing migration, the meeting concluded.
Founded in 1951, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) operates in more than 150 countries worldwide. As the leading international migration organization, IOM is dedicated to promoting a humane and orderly approach to migration that benefits both migrants and the communities they join. In Bosnia and Herzegovina, IOM provides essential services such as accommodation, food, sanitation, psychosocial support, translation, and assistance with voluntary return.
Prof. Dr. Šekib Umihanić, Acting Director of the University Clinical Center Tuzla, highlighted the significance of the agreement for Clinical Center Tuzla’s health and humanitarian mission: “This agreement with the International Organization for Migration marks an important step forward in our efforts.
