The Clinic for Oncology and Radiotherapy at the University Clinical Center Tuzla organized a specialized training session for medical staff on the proper use and benefits of port catheters.
The primary goal of this education was to highlight the advantages of venous port catheters in oncology care. These devices provide a reliable, safe, and long-term solution for accessing central veins, significantly improving the administration of treatments for oncology patients.
Port catheters are widely used in various therapeutic procedures, including chemotherapy, parenteral nutrition, and transfusions. By minimizing the need for frequent venipunctures, they facilitate a more comfortable and less painful administration of therapy.
Typically implanted in the chest, port catheters are positioned beneath the skin, allowing patients to carry out daily activities without restriction. Their discreet placement significantly enhances comfort and overall quality of life for patients undergoing long-term treatment.
During the theoretical segment of the training, participants attended expert lectures covering key aspects of the port system. Lejla Balvanović, Master of Nursing and Head nurse of the Clinic for Oncology and Radiotherapy, provided an in-depth presentation on the definition of the port system and the procedure for port catheter implantation.
Additionally, Amela Kafedžić, a graduate nurse at the Clinic for Oncology and Radiotherapy, delivered a lecture on the topic “Working with a Port Catheter.”
Following the theoretical session, participants engaged in hands-on practical training. This included a live demonstration of proper port catheter handling, hygiene maintenance, and catheter protection.
