The World Heart Federation organizes World Heart Day, an international campaign held on September 29 to raise awareness of cardiovascular diseases. This year, the team of health professionals from the Clinic for Invasive Cardiology, University Clinical Center Tuzla joined in celebration of World Heart Day, 2017. To mark the day, our employees from the Clinic for Invasive Cardiology today organized public talks with our citizens and patients in the downtown with aim to promote a heart- healthy lifestyle and preventative measures to reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases.
On the occasion, Ass. Prof. Elmir Jahić, MD, head of the Clinic for Invasive Cardiology said that cardiovascular disease continues to be the leading cause of death in our country and the world. “ Potential contributing risk factors for cardiovascular disease include raised cholesterol and glucose blood level, high blood pressure, obesity, lack of physical activity diabetes and genetic factors. There are many coronary heart disease risk factors that can be prevented and controlled. Therefore, the aim of this action is to promote a heart- healthy lifestyle changes.” he said.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), there are more than 22 million children under 5 years old who suffer from obesity, and more of 50% of them are passive smokers, and smoking is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Moreover, inadequate intake of fruit and vegetables is responsible for the development of 20% of all cardiovascular diseases, while lack of habitual physical activity is now considered to be the fourth major risk for coronary heart disease. In Bosnia and Herzegovina we have the increase of death from heart disease in 40% of people under 75 years old. The leading group are ischemic heart and cerebrovascular diseases.
