This week, Prof.dr. Wolfgang Gstottner, head of the ENT department of the AKH Vienna Hospital in Austria visited the University Clinical Center Tuzla, and together with the team of surgeons from the Clinic of Ear, Nose and Throat performed the 50th cohlear implantation in our hospital. On the occasion, Prof. dr. Gstottner announced he’ll make his return visit to his colleagues from Tuzla to introduce new ENT surgical procedures.
“A cohlear implants are intended for children who have severe hearing impairments and who do not benefit from a hearing aid. The cohlear implants are being introduced to help children to learn to listen and to talk. They are also applicable in adults who had acquired deafness after learning language.” said Prof. Gstottner
Prof. dr Fuad Brkić, head of ENT Clinic said that the otorhinolaringology team at Clinical Center Tuzla have performed cohlear implant surgery independently since the year 2001, but a demanding surgical approach requires constant practical training as well as knowledge and skills updating.
Over the course of the last two decades, cohlear implantation has been an approved method of treating hearing loss for persons in medical center around the world. Cohlear implants greatly enhance the quality of life and provide educational opportunities for hearing- impaired students.
