World Antibiotic Awareness Week is marked 12-18 November around the world with aim to increase awareness to the role of effective use of antibiotics. This year’s campaign joined the Tuzla city. A press conference on the occasion was held yesterday at the Medical faculty, University of Tuzla.
Doctors, microbiologists and representatives of associations of medical and pharmacology students met with the media to talk about the week. As it was said during the press 700 000 deaths globally could be attributed to antimicrobial resistance.
“Unfortunately, we face with excessive and unnecessary antibiotic use that leads to antibiotic resistance and problems in the treatment of severe infections. It is estimated that drug resistant infections could cause 10 million deaths a year by 2050.” said prof. Dr. Nijaz Tihić, chief of the Institute for Microbiology, University Clinical Center Tuzla.
The World Health Organization estimates that annually 40 million drugs are being irrationally prescribed, and if this trend continues, that could cause the emergence of the number of resistant strains to many different antibiotics. That is the reason why the role of pharmacists in this growing problem is of great importance.
In speaking to the press, Prim. Dr. Aldina Ahmetagić said that the University Clinical Center Tuzla follows antibiotic policy, thus antibiotic are being identified through the antibiogram. “The education of the population is necessary because some people take antibiotic when they are in pain or have a viral infection.”
Within this week activities, the University Clinical Center Tuzla will host a professional meeting for doctors residents on 13 November 2018 beginning at 14.00 hours at the Clinic for Infectious Diseases.
