Health professionals from the Department for Endocrinology, Clinic for Internal Medicine marked the World Diabetes Day 2018. According to International Diabetes Federation data, more than 425 million people are currently living with diabetes, and in 2017 this condition was cause of 4 million of deaths around the world.
The theme for World Diabetes Day 2018 is “The Family and Diabetes”. The aim of the campaign is to promote the role of the family in the management, care, prevention and education of diabetes.
For this year’s awareness day, health professionals from the Clinic for Internal Medicine have organized free of charge action of blood glucose, blood pressure and body mass index measuring for the public. During the campaign our citizens had an opportunity to learn about healthy and reduction diet, healthy lifestyle, diabetes prevention, treatment and management.
On the occasion of the day, Ass. Prof. Jasna Merić, head of the Department for Endocrinology said that 80% of cases diabetes type 2 can be prevented by adopting a healthy lifestyle, because the key risk factors of the condition are obesity, unhealthy diet, lack of exercise, family history and high blood pressure. According to her, urban environment and lifestyle increase the risk for the development of diabetes type 2, as certain social and cultural determinants of health are closely linked.
