December 16, marks the third anniversary of opening the Department of Hematology and Oncology at Clinic for Children’s Diseases. Three years ago the Society of families and friends of children suffering and treated from leukemia and other malignant diseases PIPOL, the University Clinical Center Tuzla, and many socially responsible individuals had successfully implemented a project of adaptation and reconstruction of the Department of Hematology and Oncology at Clinic for Children’s Diseases.
The occasion gathered PIPOL representatives, hospital management team, health professionals from the Clinic for Children’s Diseases, patients and members of the press. The attendees were addressed by the Tuzla Canton Minister of Health Dr. Dajana Čolić, director of the University Clinical Center Tuzla Prof. Dr. Vahid Jusufović, head of the Department of Hematology and Oncology Prim. Dr. Amila Latifagić and president od PIPOL Amra Saračević who gave positive feedback about the results and accomplishments of the Department.
In speaking to the press, Prim.Dr. Amila Latifagić said that the Department annually hospitalized 20 patients suffering from leukemia, tumors of central nervous system and other malignancies. The treatment of these patients on average lasts about 2 years, and follow-up 5 to 10 years, depending on the degree and type of disease. She also added that annually there are 15 newly- discovered cases of the disease in children, and that the youngest patients was 3 months old. The statistic data of the Clinic has shown that acute leukemia has been the most common disease during the last ten years, followed by tumors of the central nervous system and tumors of the lymph gland, she said.
To brighten the celebration, PIPOL representatives made a birthday cake for all patients, their parents and health professionals of the Clinic for Children’s Diseases.
