A multidisciplinary team of surgeons and doctors from the Clinic for Ear, Nose and Throat, the Clinic for Neurosurgery, the Clinic for Radiology and Nuclear Medicine, and the Polyclinic for Laboratory Diagnostics, University Clinical Center Tuzla has successfully performed embolization and removal of tumor of the nose, paranasal sinuses and skull base in a 42-year-old patient.
As on the occasion Ass.Prof. Mirza Moranjkić, neurosurgeon explained, a patient with a large, well-vascularized tumor of the middle part of the face was planned for a “staged” approach of treatment for easier access and intraoperative bleeding control. The plan was to devascularize the tumor by endovascular embolization in the first phase so it could be surgically removed. The team of neurosurgeons led by Ass. Prof Mirza Moranjkić made endovascular embolization for preoperative devascularization of tumor, and the patient was transferred to the Clinic for Ear, Nose and Throat, where he was operated on the following day.
“This multidisciplinary approach that includes preoperative endovascular embolization is undertaken to devascularize tumor with the goal of minimizing blood loss during surgery, and that is exactly what makes the distinction in relation to other cases with similar tumors.” he said.
The head of the team of surgeons from the Clinic for Ear, Nose and throat Dr. Emir Šehanović said that embolization has become an important therapeutic procedure and a supplement to the surgical treatment of these tumors. The endovascular approach targets the tumor blood supply, and embolization excludes the tumor from the circulation which greatly facilitates access to the surgeon.
